Not in my Neighborhood
Living in Las Vegas, there is no shortage of crime. Less than two weeks ago, a teenage boy was gunned down while he was walking home from school with a group of friends. He died. A couple of days later, a man was shot and killed during what police described as a home invasion robbery. That shooting happened just a mile from my new home.
Working in news for nearly a decade, I have heard it said over and over, “this is a quiet neighborhood,” or “I never thought it would happen here.” I find myself asking now, “Why not?”
There is no such thing as a safe neighborhood anymore. Everyone at some point is at risk. Sure, there are small communities with little to no crime, but violence is everywhere. It can happen at anytime, anywhere.
Just this morning, I read a story on MSNBC.com about a man who shot and killed his mother before murdering a neighbor and a small child. And, police said,“This was a tragic event in a quiet neighborhood.” Wouldn’t this be tragic anywhere? What callous murder isn’t tragic?
I pose this to the media and all of the other journalists trying to get the story… when you are writing your story for print or air, don’t say, “the murder happened in a quiet neighborhood,” or “this upscale community never expected such a violent crime to happen here.” It only leads people to believe they are safe or somehow immune from some terrible crime touching their lives.
You know the saying……Don’t judge a book by it’s cover? Don’t judge a neighborhood by it’s money.
GIRRRL, those reporters just say “the murder happened in a quiet neighborhood” because they’re just trying to fill the ridiculous amount of air time created by producers! 🙂 And really, doesn’t it sound better in the headline to say: “Murder in a Quiet Neighborhood!” Don’t you know the tricks by now!? They don’t sell news without fear! You have been around this news block…you know how this works! You wrote the headlines too…not too long ago! Isn’t that why you left? Of course smart people know murders happen every where! The news isn’t written for the smart ones! And the most interesting murders happen in the wealthiest neighborhoods where it’s all about sex, drugs and major MONEY! Don’t be upset…just know that it’s all a big game…don’t watch or read the paper if it gets you this upset. Listen to NPR instead….and enjoy life. 🙂
Remember…a sexy story is better than another murder!!
I miss news and those tragic murders!
And don’t forget to check out Dayna Roselli’s blog on What’s Driving You Crazy! 🙂
I hear ya Crystal!
A few weeks ago.. I was asking myself the very same thinig…
Since Dallas is such a big TV market.. there are countless murders/crime stories every day.. so it’s like you have to weed through them to find which one is more teasable or interesting.. as sad as that sounds…
BUT.. there was a shooting (NOT MURDER mind you) near our house.. which is by Highland Park (one of the wealthiest neighborhood in Texas)… and EVERY local station covered it.. haha… JUST BECAUSE.. it was in that neighborhood…
It’s like.. are there no better stories to cover in market # 5? a random shooting… c’mon!
